An Abuja based anti-corruption NGO, Almushahid Initiative for Transparency and Accountability (AITA), congratulates Major General Farouk Yahaya on his appointment as the new Chief of Army Staff by President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a press release signed by its National President; Ambassador Aminu Abubakar Majidadi and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, AITA commend Mr President for the appointment and hope to see the new COAS making relentless efforts in fighting insurgency, banditry and other acts of insecurities bedeviling Nigeria.
Ambassador Majidadi in the release expressed concern why Nigeria as a giant of Africa that has over the years been involved in peace-keeping missions to several African countries and beyond but cannot defeat insurgency within its territory for over a decade.
“Nigeria is known in Africa as one country that has for the past decades sent troops to Somalia, Liberia, Sierra-leone and many other countries for peace missions and yet failed to tackle the same problem here back home?”
“We all know that Nigeria still has able, capable and well trained soldiers whom the masses were having confidence in until when security matters were politicized. Nigerian soldiers if given the right support, insurgency, banditry, kidnaping, etc cannot last beyond three months.” It stated.
AITA further called on the new Army Chief to follow the steps of his predecessor, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru who died in active service to Nigeria in that capacity. AITA also wished the new COAS the best in discharge of his duties and prayed that Allah will guide the Nigerian military in the fight against insecurity.
