A vigilante group said it arrested a man, Favour Chuks, son of a serving Divisional Police Officer, with a bag containing substances suspected to be Indian hemp around Gateway Junction in Ada George, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The vigilante, Rivers State Neighbourhood Watch, said the arrest followed a tip which its officials immediately acted on.

Director of Operations of the Neighbourhood Watch, Mathew Iheanyi, disclosed this to newsmen in the state capital on Wednesday.

He said the suspect was arrested at about 10 pm on Tuesday while trying to board a tricycle popularly called Keke.

Iheanyi said the suspect was nabbed with a red cellophane bag containing the substance while he was also smoking, saying he has been handed over to the Kala Police Division.

He stated, “As you can see the man behind us here, he was apprehended with a full bag of substances. Probably, he is one of the dealers who are petronising people distributing drugs in Rivers State.

” He is the son of a serving police officer, a DPO, for that matter. Imagine the person this boy is disgracing, a DPO. He was even smoking at the time we arrested him.
“Imagine the quantity of drugs we found on him. How can we allow this miscreant to move freely in the state?

“That is why we say anybody who feels that Rivers State will not have peace, the person too will not have peace, * he said.

The suspect, Favour Chuks, who admitted smoking Indian Hemp however denied being the owner of the exhibit.

He said it was given to him by a friend to hold before members of the security outfit arrested him.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, proved abortive, as she did not answer several calls put across to her mobile.

She also had yet to reply to a text message sent to her as of the time of filing this report.
