THE Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua community has been thrown into mourning as two of its female students lost their lives in a fatal accident involving a motorcyclist conveying them and a truck loaded with Pepsi drink.
It was gathered that the two students identified as Abasifreke Okon, from Ikot Abasi Local Government Area and, Irene Edwin, from Ibesikpo Asutan LGA were National Diploma (ND 2) students of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT).
Newsmen learnt that the two friends and coursemates were going to gather materials for their practical examinations on Tuesday when they met their untimely death.
The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Mathew Olonisaye, who confirmed the incident to newsmen on Tuesday in Uyo, disclosed that
the motorcyclist conveyong the students also died instantly in the accident which occurred at about 3:30pm on Monday.
Olonisaye, who also disclosed the accident occurred at a junction around Ikot Inyang village along the ever- busy Ikot Ekpene- Aba road, attributed the accident to wrongful overtaking.
He described the incident as sad and unfortunate, even as he advised road users to always adhere to road safety rules while driving.
He sympathized with the School authorities , parents and families of the three persons that lost their lives in the accident.
Vanguard further gathered that the School has put all the ongoing examinations on hold, to allow the School community mourn her departed students.
