AIHS 2024: Experts Underscore Importance of Data in Solving Housing DeficitBy CECILIA OGEZIExperts at the 18th African International Housing Show organized in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, have emphasized data’s pivotal role in addressing the nation’s housing deficit. The plenary session, “The Housing We Need: What Does Data Tell Us?” featured a keynote presentation by Kecia Rust, Executive Director, Centre for Affordable Housing Finance. Rust’s research with the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company focused on finance access, affordability, housing supply, property market, policy, and legislation. Findings revealed that women often owned houses without titles or certifications.

Consultant Biodun Adedipe, from B. Adedipe Associates Limited, stressed the uniqueness of the housing market. He advocated for government collaboration with the private sector, infrastructure development, engagement with relevant institutions, and use of local materials, emphasizing the need for subsidies and incentives.

Former NIESV president highlighted data’s critical role in achieving housing accessibility. He criticized government and professional bodies for their failures and called for improved data regulation and government involvement.

CEO of the National Bureau of Statistics, Adeyemi Adeniran, represented by Audu Olokpo, noted data’s contribution to 5.2% of GDP, linking economic well-being to housing.

Director General of the National Population Commission, Ojogun Osifo, reiterated that comprehensive data is accessible, with every building mapped and housing release dates available.

Deputy Governor for Economic Policy, Muhammad Abdullahi, represented by Elisha Douglas, emphasized the economic value of data, advocating for an environment that consolidates data for tracking progress and future planning.

Former Housing Census Director at NPC, Evelyn Olanipekun, pointed out the need for better coordination and a holistic approach to data. She highlighted NPC’s efficient and detailed data, stressing that improving data quality is crucial for future planning.
