Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Lagbaja, passes away at 56 Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, has died at the age of 56.

The news was announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in a statement released on Wednesday morning.

General Lagbaja, a distinguished and widely respected military leader, reportedly passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos following a period of illness.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, issued an official statement detailing the General’s career and legacy.

“Born on February 28, 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja’s military journey began with his enrollment in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987,” the statement read.

“Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, Lagbaja rapidly climbed the ranks through his commitment, professionalism, and remarkable leadership.”

General Lagbaja’s career spanned several pivotal roles within the Nigerian Army, beginning as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and later in the elite 72 Special Forces Battalion.

Throughout his career, he played instrumental roles in multiple internal security operations across the country, contributing to efforts to stabilise regions plagued by insecurity and unrest.

His notable operations included “Operation ZAKI” in Benue State, “Lafiya Dole” in Borno, “Udoka” in the Southeast, and “Operation Forest Sanity” across Kaduna and Niger States.

In addition to his field expertise, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja was highly regarded for his dedication to strategic studies and military intelligence.

He graduated from the prestigious U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, underscoring his commitment to academic and professional growth.
His education and training made him one of Nigeria’s most informed and forward-thinking military leaders.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja was appointed Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023.

In this role, he focused on modernising Nigeria’s military capabilities, enhancing discipline within the ranks, and prioritizing the welfare of soldiers across the armed forces.

His leadership style was both compassionate and rigorous, earning him respect within and beyond the military.

President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, offering his condolences to Lagbaja’s family, including his wife, Mariya, and their two children.

“We have lost a dedicated leader and true patriot,” Tinubu said. “His contributions to our nation’s security and stability will be remembered. The Nigerian Armed Forces have lost one of their finest, and the nation mourns his departure.”

The military and political community across Nigeria have responded with tributes, hailing Lt. Gen. Lagbaja as a beacon of courage and resilience.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio described him as “a soldier’s soldier, whose legacy will live on in the achievements of those he mentored.”

The Nigerian Army has planned a tribute ceremony to honor Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s life and service.

As the country mourns the loss of this highly esteemed leader, his memory remains a testament to bravery, discipline, and unwavering dedication to the nation.

His legacy leaves an indelible mark on Nigeria’s military history, serving as an inspiration for future generations of soldiers.
